ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the open-source Flexible Language Acquisitionan (FLAX) project automated digital library scheme that has developed and tested an extraction method that identifies typical lexico-grammatical features of any word or phrase in a corpus for data-driven learning. It draws attention to the open educational resource (OER) movement, where the emphasis on "open" signifies more than freely available teaching and learning resources for philanthropic purposes. The chapter illustrates to design, with regard to the Law Collections in FLAX. It contains a novel corpus-based tool, FLAX, that identifies useful lexico-grammatical patterns and extracts academic words, collocations, and lexical bundles in academic texts. Academic texts have considerable value for supporting English for specific academic purposes (ESAP), and many pedagogical implications have arisen from studies of academic corpora. The experiment described was conceived as a method to measure quantitatively the usefulness and effectiveness of employing a corpus-based online learning platform, FLAX, in the teaching of legal English.
