ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the sport and physical activity legacies resulting from the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Summer Games. In this chapter, we discuss the unique context of sport delivery in the United States and the socio-political forces that both constrain and foster mass sport participation and elite sport achievement. Within that context, we explore the impact of the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games on local and national participation trends and discuss what factors have hindered and constrained engagement in sport participation in the United States. We conclude the chapter by offering suggestions on how to overcome the structural, socio-political, and economic hurdles affecting mass participation in US sport.
