ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the ways in which legacy was used in relation to the London 2012 Olympic Games. The chapter begins with an overview of the UK’s socio-political context before progressing to discuss the governance of community sport in England. The chapter then examines the legacy aspirations and plans for London 2012 and the central place of sport within these plans, before assessing the extent to which mass participation in sport changed before, during, and after the hosting of the 2012 Games. The chapter concludes with a discussion of primary challenges that adversely affected the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the London 2012 legacy.
