ABSTRACT

In this chapter we explore the benefits of neighbourhood and place-based physical activity (PA), it is important to look at some basic definitions and frame the problem briefly. ‘Physical inactivity has been identified as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality causing an estimated 3.2 million deaths globally’ (World Health Organization, n.d.). These effects are not only felt by adults; over 41 million children under the age of 5 are considered obese (WHO, 2016). Clearly the situation is critical with significant implications for healthcare, their associated costs, however, and more importantly, for health related quality of life.
