ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to provide physical activity promoters with guidance to inform the development of physical activity promotion strategies most likely to be successful in changing population physical activity. Firstly, we present the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion framework and the concepts that have shaped the promotion of health enhancing physical activity. Secondly, we identify relevant behaviour change theories and physical activity promotion strategies that have been used in interventions to change physical activity behaviour and the environmental factors that influence it. To illustrate the practical application of frameworks, theories and strategies to physical activity promotion, two case studies are presented. Case studies focus on physical activity promotion interventions led by mass media-based educational strategies within a larger mix of strategies, as these important physical activity interventions are not the focus of other chapters. Finally, we conclude with a summary of the best physical activity promotion strategies in which to invest to increase physical activity globally.
