ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on international issues related to physical inactivity and health. The chapter presents the global prevalence of physical activity, and how inactivity arose differently across the world. Then, policy efforts to address inactivity are described, and indicate the need for standardised measurement and surveillance systems to monitor progress. Many countries lack a clear strategy for addressing inactivity, and it receives less attention than other behavioural risk factors. Case studies are used to illustrate good practice in scaled-up physical activity programmes as a guide for national efforts to promote and sustain health-enhancing physically active populations.
