ABSTRACT
Following the death of his father, Rainer Maria Rilke discovered among his eects a daguerreotype that he’d not seen since a child. As a young man his father had sat still for the camera’s long exposure, dressed in his imperial ocer uniform; now the son’s gaze was drawn to his father’s youthful hands, which rested on the hilt of his sword.
