ABSTRACT

In this paper we discuss the application of urban risk assessments in small and medium-sized cities in Latin America and the Caribbean, and highlight the need to link or incorporate climate change adaptation into existing priorities, sectoral plans, and planning instruments. Our discussion draws on the results from a recently conducted World Bank-funded project “Climate Change Adaptation Planning in Latin American and Caribbean Cities” (Table 1). The project was designed to inform policy-making and climate change adaptation planning in five small and medium-sized cities in the region: Castries, Saint Lucia; Cusco, Peru; El Progreso, Honduras; Estelí, Nicaragua; and Santos, Brazil.
