ABSTRACT

The leaders of new performing arts center projects-in other words, those who initiate projects and/or serve as decision-makers throughout the process of planning and building-are not necessarily executive directors or managers of the arts; much of the time, these people are mayors, city managers, board trustees recruited specifically for construction projects, and other types of high-powered officials. Therefore, this chapter attempts to address the myriad types of project leaders who are on the frontlines of new performing arts center initiatives. The goal of this chapter, then, is for leaders to be able to apply the information to a variety of situations and/or perspectives both inside and outside of the arts and culture sector.
