ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Mistie Barnes introduces us to the specific and unique clinical and developmental challenges of working with teenagers struggling with chronic health conditions, and demonstrates the applicability of directive play therapy interventions. She discusses the benefits of utilizing creative interventions and play therapy with teens, as well as exploring the difference between directive and non-directive play therapy as she exemplifies this application through clinical studies. She helps us to appreciate that while there is literature available on different forms of treatment for teens, clinicians continue to strive to find the most appropriate treatment for adolescents living with a chronic health condition.
