ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the role of youth voice and participation in secure settings. It describes the development of student and pupil voice initiatives in mainstream education and the debates surrounding their aims and values. The chapter provides examples of existing participatory activities for young people in secure institutions and reflects on why they have received comparatively less attention than in other educational settings. It considers what further spaces there are for young people's voices to be heard within the acoustic of secure environments identifying the conditions and values that underpin voice activities and their wider implications for interactions between staff and young people. The chapter outlines possibilities for further participatory activities in secure settings that schools have successfully applied but cautions against idealism. Reflecting on the successes of the Consulting Pupils about Teaching and Learning Network, it provides the possibility of establishing a youth voice and participation network across secure settings for the sharing and dissemination of experiences and ideas.
