ABSTRACT
Pursuing peace is a Jewish imperative that has evolved over the millennia. Although not directly found in the Bible, a number of medieval Jewish legal codes encourage the pursuit of peace, some going so far as to charge communal leaders with the task. The chapter examines both the theoretical support for peacemaking and also several examples of actual mediation, including a reference to a possible case of peacemaking between non-Jews mediated by a rabbi.
