ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores the fabrication of the teacher as a kind of person who learns to think and feel in the "right" ways in order to know whether they have "made a difference." It presents making of different kinds of students in United States science education by exploring a moment when high school science became stratified into distinct levels. The book argues that the turn-of-the-20th century general science movement sought to adapt instruction for children seen as belonging to populations with "unscientific minds." It explores the fabrication of human kinds with the alchemy of math as a school subject. The book examines how the translation of sports into Brazilian physical education disciplines children and their bodies. It investigates the cultural norms that operated through the schooling of sports.
