ABSTRACT

In this chapter we consider the Slum Dwellers International (SDI) model of development. There are parallels here to community organising, but SDI has a distinct approach, including prioritising the role of women and sustaining family income. We discuss:

The key role of women in development

The importance of stabilising family finances

The role of community research

Recognising the importance of shared learning, skill and knowledge development

Building a power base to make negotiations work

The role of experts and external agencies as support for community organisations

SDI offers a proven and effective alternative model to promoting the development of communities on a large scale.
