ABSTRACT

The ABCD model was developed in the USA, but is applicable to any setting. Fundamental to successful community development work is the identification of resources (assets) that can be used for development purposes, and the existing networks and relationship within the community that can be utilised and strengthened. We look at how:

It is important for community development to recognise that in any community there will be a range of assets that are either community resources, or have the potential to be so

Identifying these assets is a skill-sharing/bonding community activity

The most important asset is social capital, as it is the building block upon which community trust, cohesion, development and quality of life is built

The success of community development is built on identifying and effectively using community assets.

Understanding and using locally available assets is one of the keys to effective community development practice.
