ABSTRACT

This chapter builds on the previous studies exploring play and community arts. Set in West London, the study explores what can be achieved through the interrelationship of young people from diverse backgrounds and local artists. The study discusses in some detail the nature of the relationships and processes between staff and young people. It also considers the tension between the ‘Process’ of how the work was developed with the ‘Product’ of achieving planned outcomes.

The main themes explored in this study are:

Language and power

Young people

Group formation, relationships and maintenance

Development of skills and confidence

The role of a formal art organisation for community development purposes
