ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of objectives, assignments, lessons learned, and next steps. Goals and outcomes for the blended course are: The Diversity in Health course examines key underpinnings of bias, diversity, intercultural competence, and cultural safety through a number of models and perspectives. In learning activities, presented though online learning modules, students are introduced to various models of diversity through a series of exercises that explore diversity and bias on a personal level as well as in groups, using actual and fictional case studies. Assessment is accomplished in variety of ways, including: a personal reflection paper on views of diversity in light of dominant diversity models, online discussion surrounding the impact of matriarchal and patriarchal archetypes on personal bias, a cultural nursing assessment experience with volunteer client, and scholarly paper. The next assignment is unorthodox and provocative in nature in so much as students are initially presented with fictional society that is either overtly patriarchal or matriarchal in nature.
