ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates the intercultural competence of mutual cultural adaptation in a Chinese multicultural classroom in which students come from more than fifteen different cultures, and how Chinese students as the host nationals improve their intercultural competence in the classroom. It emphasises both the mutuality between international students and Chinese students and the adaptation of Chinese students. The course integrates theory and practice of intercultural communication. It requires intercultural collaboration for students to succeed in this class. The overall goal of the course is to develop student's understanding of their intercultural responses, by encouraging students to practise and test intercultural learning, to self-analyse, and finally to challenge students' cultural comfort in an unfamiliar language and classroom setting. The Yin Yang theory is employed to stipulate intercultural competence in a multicultural classroom. Based on the learning goals and outcomes, the course aims to establish a new multicultural mode for interaction.
