ABSTRACT
Issues in Global Displacement is a discipline-based upper-level university course designed to develop learner intercultural competence through a community-based service-learning initiative. The course is based in the Romance Studies Department and is cross-listed with Global Health and the Certificate Program in Ethics. The community-based learning component of this course provides students the opportunity to put into practice their study of global displacement. Each week over the course of the semester, students spend one to two hours tutoring English as a Second Language (ESL), developing digital literacy skills, and fostering cultural understanding through shared experiences such as music, sports, and cooking. With the goals of intercultural competence put into place, this chapter establishes the kinds of acceptable evidence that will best demonstrate the development of intercultural competence, including its assessment. This evidence includes: pre- and post-semester self-assessments, impactful community projects and reflective writing assignments.
