ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book sheds light on the tensions of queering educational practices in development. It explores how discursive support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights in development at large are upended by the political and religious leanings of donors, specifically evangelical Christian donors from the United States. The book investigates the "Leave no one behind" core principle of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It considers the mainstreaming of sexual orientation and gender identity, but also gender expression, and sex characteristics. The book provides a critical investigation into donorship and the effect of funding structures on LGBT movement organizations and activism activities in Malawi and South Africa. It offers a provoking analysis of the disruption of Joburg Pride in 2012 by the One in Nine Campaign, which called for one minute of silence for black queer victims of violence.
