ABSTRACT
Bayou becomes like that of other coastlines-gentrifi ed and industrializedpeople are experiencing angst over their future. Some communities are seeking to move farther inland, because their families are being separated from their subsistence life; but without a state or federal resettlement program in place, moving becomes the fi nancial responsibility of the subsistence community. Other communities, similarly to the Grand Bayou, want to stay in place in order to continue to address the issues of climate change and to maintain their cultural integrity and preserve traditional ways. This chapter explores the diffi culty of being in a situation that has few acceptable alternatives; it examines how life might be between the time of staying and the time of eventually leaving.
