ABSTRACT

In most developed countries, design control involves, by intention or necessity, negotiation between a number of parties, both lay and professional. The efficiency of this decision making process is hampered by two i.mponant shortcomings: the absence of area-specific statements of three-dimensional urban design policy and the difficulty for lay participants in envisaging the final appearance of proposals via traditional media The paper will describe proposals for remedying both problems. For the fmt, a path towards the development of design plans and a method for generating objectives and, for the second, the use of sophisticated computer visualisation. Case studies, from which encouraging results have been obtained, will be presented.
