ABSTRACT

Mangroves play an important role for human well-being by providing a wide range of ecosystem services to millions of people, including provision services (wood, timber and food), regulation services (flood control, water purification and erosion reduction), cultural services (recreational benefits and the provision of habitat that supports a rich biodiversity of hundreds of fauna and flora species. The ProEcoServ in Vietnam has supported the government to mainstream natural capital in planning processes at regional, national and provincial levels. In addition, the project has applied different supporting tools (i.e. valuation of ES, modelling and mapping) to demonstrate the value of mangrove in Ca Mau province, Vietnam, and to conduct a number of capacity building/communication activities for policy makers. This chapter presents the results of applying valuation of ES and mapping tools to support mainstreaming efforts at different levels which contribute to conserve the important mangrove ecosystem.
