ABSTRACT

Effie Beresford’s mother wants her daughter, like other young ladies, to ‘be able to play nicely on the piano’, which she thinks is a reasonable demand (p. 2). But when Effie, who practised a ‘stupid’ accompaniment ‘for at least two hours’ nonetheless plays it badly, her aunt Isobel advises, ‘Half an hour’s daily practice is better than two hours every week or so.’ (p. 150)
