ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses sociolinguistic engagement with the mass media by focusing on efforts to inform the public on issues of language policy, particularly as it pertains to education. Linguists can also help shape language policy more directly by taking firm positions and making policy recommendations in high-impact op-eds. The chapter describes specific policy changes at the local and state level that contributed over time to the teacher shortage. Linguists concerned with issues of social justice and educational inequality should not be agnostic about matters of policy, especially in a political environment in which hard-fought gains can be lost overnight. It is paramount, more than ever, for linguists to take positions on policy, to take the time to explain them clearly to the public through engagement with the media, and to follow the news cycle closely.
