ABSTRACT

Zheng (2006) examines lottery participation among 550 people in Haikou city in Hainan province. Employing a probit model, they find that being male, married, less educated, and having lower income are correlated with participation in lotteries. Another study, using data collected from Yangzhou city in Jiangsu province, finds that neither marital status nor income were significantly correlated with lottery participation (Zhang 2007). A limitation of both studies is that neither distinguishes between participants in legal and illegal lotteries and thus do not provide insights into the characteristics of those who participate in the illegal lottery.1
