Master plans in Beijing have been closely associated with the evolving political-economic context of China’s development (Table 3). The visions of master plans were largely transformed from a socialist production city to a global city. Particularly in the reform era, master plans in Beijing attempted to control population growth and increasingly stressed the importance of ecological sustainability, service industries, and livability.
