ABSTRACT

Another one of Jim’s most prominent areas of contribution relates to the United States urban/metropolitan hierarchy and its role in information flows, in corporate headquarters and financial services, and in the service economy. Examples of his publications in this area include his seminal papers of “Corporate Spatial Links with Financial Institutions: The Role of the Metropolitan Hierarchy” (Wheeler, 1986), “Information Flows among Major Metropolitan Areas in the United States” (Wheeler & Mitchelson, 1989a), and “The Flow of Information in a Global Economy: The Role of the American Urban System in the 1990” (Mitchelson & Wheeler, 1994). Jim also used the hierarchical approach to study individual cities such as New York and Atlanta, as in “The Corporate Role of New York in the Metropolitan Hierarchy” (Wheeler, 1990b) and “Atlanta’s Role as an Information Center: Intermetropolitan Spatial Links” (Wheeler & Mitchelson, 1989b).
