ABSTRACT

For centuries, corals reefs in the South Pacific Islands have been essential to the well-being and livelihood of Pacific Islanders. Resources from coral reefs constitute essential components of the diet of the people of these Pacific Islands. Nowadays, coral reefs continue to support income-generating activities such as fisheries and tourism, thus playing a significant role in the economies of many Pacific Islands. This chapter is an attempt to demonstrate, based on recent literature review and various reports, the current conditions of some of the reefs in selected islands of the Pacific. It also offers further insights into challenges and issues that affect tourism development and the overall regional effort by relevant organisations to mitigate impacts and ensure sustainability of future reef activities.
