ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the importance of tourism activities related to Egypt’s coral reefs and adopts an interdisciplinary approach based on a collaboration between biologists and economists. The chapter examines the socio-economic losses that can accrue anthropogenic activities and comments on strategies that have been adopted by the Egyptian government to ensure more effective and sustainable management of Egypt’s coral reef ecosystems. The chapter recognises the key role that coral reef tourism will play in the ongoing growth of Egypt’s tourism sector and stresses the need for policymakers to both implement and give long-term support for environmentally friendly policies to ensure that sustainable tourism remains an economic driver.
