ABSTRACT

Because of all the severe negative and long standing physical and psychosocial consequences of eating disorders (EDs), the high burden of care, and the economic costs of treatment, there is a clear consensus about the need for prevention. However, no consensus exists about the strategy to reach this goal. Concerning the future of prevention, quite different and sometimes conflicting strategies are proposed, such as those in the articles by Austin (2015) and Corning and Heibel (2015). Whereas Austin pleads for a macro-social approach, Corning and Heibel plead for a healthy identity development. Can we overcome a call for such conflicting strategies and develop a unified strategy in which all relevant steps to prevent EDs are included?
