ABSTRACT

The major focus of Training session is supporting and encouraging parents as they learn and practice their new play session skills. With so much information and activity packed into each Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT) training session, therapists may be inclined to dispense with this informal sharing time. Parents were asked to be aware of one intense feeling they experienced during their play sessions with their children. The therapist can use the supervision of video-recorded play sessions to introduce the Play Session Skills Checklist that parents are asked to complete at home the next week after their play sessions. Although all CPRT skills are reviewed in Session 5, typically the concept and application of limit setting is an area that most parents struggle with; therefore, review and demonstration of this skill is crucial. The therapist’s primary training strategy throughout the 10 sessions is to structure training and experiences to maximize parents’ successes.
