ABSTRACT

Urgent action on the three reform buckets of employment, employability and education is the need of the hour. Failing this, translating the demographic opportunity into dividend will be a tall order. For long, skill-training has taken a back seat in India's educational system. It is time that this is rectified and training made an integral aspect of employability for India's growing young population. The source of the problems lies in the mismatch between demand and supply; 90 per cent of employment opportunities require vocational skills but 90 per cent of our college/school output has only bookish knowledge. Karnataka has over 34 Employment Exchanges to cater to the employment needs of the job-seekers and the employee needs of the organisations. In 2009, the Karnataka Vocational Skills and Training Development Corporation (KVTSDC), Department of Employment and Training (DET) and Team lease Services Pvt. Ltd. brainstormed to find possible solutions to the Employment and Employability problem in the State.
