This chapter describes the available research studies, as well as websites where discussions, comments and articles about these schools feature, is a revised and edited version of Nambissan. It claims about low-cost private schools in India have been examined. The chapter points out that while the picture one has of this sector is fragmentary and requires systematic study, the low-cost private schools being advocated for the poor and the emerging edu-business around it have serious implications for the right to education of their children. The non-state sector has played a critical role in the spread of elementary education in India. The fact that private and corporate players are content largely with offering only minimalistic primary-level schooling with a promise to poor parents that their children will have access to good quality English-medium education is a clear case of discrimination against these families.
