ABSTRACT

The intimate entwinement of dance and music has left indelible imprints on both art forms. The beauty of this artistic marriage arises from the essential attraction of dance to music and music to dance. In this relationship, music can serve dance as a subservient partner and accompaniment, or it can function as an equal component in a choreo-musical work, providing a sonic counterpoint to dance’s visual action. Most dance, in fact, has a musical component, and if one considers silence in music to be the analogue to stillness in dance, then all dance-including silent ones-incorporates music into its realm. If all dance has music and coexists in a deep connection to and association with it, students pursuing dance studies are obliged to cultivate an understanding of music and the dance-music partnership.
