ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the majority of the libretto-programs were found in the collections of major libraries in Paris and the surrounding region. It examines the company's evolution over a period that scholars had previously overlooked primarily because of the limited number of extant archival sources. Whether printed for first productions or restagings, the libretto-programs were generally published for the first of a performance series and, as such, do not include possible alternations in the interpreter of a given role. Relying once again on the cast lists in the libretto-programs, author tried to determine which roles had been assigned to which dancers on the basis of their sex. The layout of the cast lists also makes it possible to deduce the existence of elective partnerships. At the conclusion of the chapter, it appears evident that the lists of the performers' names open numerous possibilities for investigation.
