ABSTRACT

This chapter shows some of the specific Christological issues it is worth briefly covering some more general Christological issues. Mark's Christology can prove to be an especially fruitful area to examine the dominant interests of New Testament scholarship. The 'antinomian' Markan Jesus of modern scholarship can also be used to construct a Markan Christology doing something radically different from the early Judaism. The view that there was a Jewish Christian dynasty imposing a nationalistic Davidic Messiah is misleading. Probably the one phrase which has become associated with Jesus' death and suffering in Mark is 'son of man'. Philip G. Davis, in contrast to much of traditional Markan scholarship on the Son of God problem, believes the Hellenistic versus Jewish Son of God misses the point. The orthodox Christian view of the full divinity of Christ has proved to be one of the most significant means of distinguishing Christianity from other monotheistic faiths such as Judaism or Islam.
