ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the Indian tradition of the guru-disciple relationship in the field of spirituality and yoga, by taking a sample of four disciples from the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. The guru-disciple bond, although a common occurrence in the Indian culture, is in essence a life-transforming process. A relationship was built with the sense of an inner presence of the guru and an active inner connection was established. The chapter discusses the interview sessions were held in a quiet environment. All sessions were recorded with prior permission of the participants. The participants were encouraged to share their personal experiences and their insights about the processes that changed them as individuals due to their associations with the guru, wherever possible with concrete instances. The participants for this research were chosen keeping this in mind, and with the hope that understanding their experiences and methods would facilitate a better insight into the relationship they shared with their gurus and the processes of self-transformation.
