ABSTRACT

The overlapping experience of co-constructing a field-based course and co-constructing research around the course is our focus in this chapter, as we posit alternatives to teacher training' and traditional hierarchical structures. To draw all of the discussions in this chapter together, we return to the notion of collaboration and highlight certain themes running through our experiences and, thus, through this paper as one set of representations of these experiences. Our main focus has been examining the purposes of education and educational research, and positioning co teaching/co writing/co researching as ways to co-construct experiences in the academy to the benefit of all participants in teaching and research. Though we have pulled them apart here for the sake of interpretation and discussion, these emphases are interwoven, and ultimately layer together to support us as we focus on conducting research that expands roles and contests hierarchies.
