ABSTRACT

Energy supply security has been a prominent issue of US economic and security policy agendas for decades. Both the EU and the USA face major complications in their efforts to achieve what they both agree is necessary namely, a balanced approach to the energy triangle and avoidance of energy trilemmas. While there may be agreement that energy security is often defined as a national priority everywhere, there are very different ideas about the best ways of achieving it. Despite these challenges, both the USA and the European Union appear to recognise the value of balance in their search for energy security, and it appears they may each have something to offer the other in achieving it. From the American perspective, new technologies for retrieving unconventional gas and oil can help Europe to increase diversification, create jobs, spur new industries and reduce import dependencies.
