ABSTRACT

This chapter reports on one part of a larger project on teacher educators in different types of institutions in Pakistan. Teacher education in the public sector in Pakistan is offered in five types of institutions managed by the provincial governments: government elementary colleges of education (GECEs), government colleges of education (GCEs), university departments, institutes of education and research (IERs) and directorates. The goal of the wider qualitative research was to understand the lives and identities of teacher educators working in various types of teacher education institutions in the public sector in Pakistan. Historically, teacher education colleges in Pakistan have focused on preparing prospective teachers to pass examinations. Literature from outside Pakistan shows that conducting research and publishing in scholarly journals are important, if sometimes contested, aspects of the identities of teacher educators in higher education. The Higher Education Commission has established an Accreditation Council for Teacher Education.
