ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses (1) the burden of CVD in ethnic minority and migrant populations; (2) approaches to understanding of predisposing factors; and (3) application of the results to give insight into the potential threats that their countries of origin are likely to face. Chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are major health problems in most ethnic minority and migrant populations living in high income countries. The author's used similar surveys from the UK (the Health Survey for England and the Newcastle Heart Project) and the Netherlands (the SUNSET study) to explore the role of national context on CVD risk factors among South Asian and African Caribbean populations living in these two countries. The prevalence of CVD risk factors also differ among ethnic groups. Whilst CVD is a major health burden in most ethnic minority groups living in high income countries of Europe and North America.
