ABSTRACT

Twenty-five years after the first Growing Up in Cities research in Powisle, the project returned to this old working-class district of Warsaw to listen to young people present their lives, after the radical change from Communism to a free market system. Thus Powisle becomes a window to glimpse how dramatic social, political and economic changes are influencing the lives of young people in eastern Europe. The 10–15 year old residents of Powisle compared the district with the rest of Warsaw and described their daily lives, hopes and fears, as well as their views of contemporary politics. They also shared their sense of powerlessness in their city, along with their desire to take positive actions for the environment.
