ABSTRACT

Growing Up in Cities returned to Braybrook, a suburb of Melbourne (Australia), 25 years after the project was first carried out in this ‘underclass’ community. The physical environment and the frustrations of its young residents remain largely unchanged, although the composition of its population reflects a new ethnic diversity. The community is revealed by its young people through the lenses of gender, ethnicity and age. The initial research phase of Growing Up in Cities was used to create Streetspace, an innovative school-based project that uses participatory design to reduce young people’s marginalisation and increase their access to public spaces.
