ABSTRACT

Oregon. The Web page she explores is physically located in Dallas, but provides news of events in Africa and Asia, along with hypertext links to sites elsewhere in the United States, including (almost incidentally) her home state. While she surfs, she listens to an “oldies” radio station playing a Beatles song that was recorded in the 1960s in England and is broadcast on this day in the 1990s over a several hundred square mile area of upstate New York, and, coincidentally, in Boise, Idaho. Meanwhile her boss does business with a client in California, using his cellular phone, as he drives across Schenectady, New York, in a car made in Alabama by a German company. The activity patterns, social networks, and experiential ranges of Americans are scattered through space and time in a pattern of dizzying complexity.
