ABSTRACT

The Design and Planning Assistance Center (DPAC) is a community service organization sponsored by the University of New Mexico School of Architecture and Planning. In addition to this primary function, Pueblo members considered the possibilities of providing for two related activities within the center: the home management program run by Six Sandoval Indian Pueblos, Inc., and a cooperative food market. Pueblo representatives felt that the cultural food center might be an appropriate place for a cooperative market to be situated. Since the Cultural Food Center was intended to be a focal point in passing on traditions unique to the Pueblo culture, a design process that actively engaged the client in detailing his ideas of what "ought to be" was essential. The model provides a quick and concrete means by which a client can participate directly in the design process. The pictorial display was also a very effective technique for explicitly conveying building and human requirements.
