ABSTRACT

Environmental programming is the process used to formulate the design problem in human behavioral terms so that design limitations can be established, design possibilities can be explored, and responsible design decisions can be made from a sound basis of information. Additionally, the process investigates the concerns imposed by budget as well as the implications for change in the future. The process, to be successful, must include the accurate movement of information by which the participants share insights, experiences, and knowledge with each other. Programming activity is directed toward formulating environmental design problems and describing alternative solutions to these problems. This activity involves fine distinct phases: awareness, diagnosis, strategy, action, and evaluation. The benefits derived from this approach occur during the design process and appear in the final product. The design process is made more efficient by reducing the time to develop design solutions and by insuring that the client's objectives.
