ABSTRACT

In this chapter the authors report on an attempt to build a device for speculation. This ‘speculator’ allows creating speculation as a situated and material practice rather than a mere epistemic endeavour restricted to expert practice. Behind this speculator stood a research project that aimed at creating disaster and emergency provision scenarios. The device and the setup allow expert and non-expert players alike to develop original and risky ways to relate to their futures. The chapter gives some results derived from its operation and describes a catalogue of speculative techniques and forms.
