ABSTRACT

[Byron] English Bards and Scotch Reviewers (1809); Critical Review, 3rd Series, XVII (May 1809), 78–85. The Pursuits of Literature (1794) was a satirical poem by T.J. Mathias. The Baviad (1794) and The Maeviad (1795) made the reputation of William Gifford, first editor of the Quarterly Review. The reviewer vigorously defends the use of Medieval fairy lore as a fitting alternative to classical mythology and supports Scott’s choice of subjects and his handling of history (pp. 80–82). He also gives Byron a timely warning against making unnecessary enemies.
