ABSTRACT

Byron, Letter to [John Murray], 2nd edition (1821); Edinburgh Monthly Review, V (May 1821), 616–626. On pages 617–618 occurs an interesting image that Shelley was employing about the same time, to somewhat different ends in Adonais; on page 625 occurs a sentiment on didactic poetry resembling passages in Shelley’s Defence of Poetry. It is clear, however, that Shelley neither wrote nor read this review; such ideas and language were simply “in the air” during the period.
